Account setup

Cent account or standard account for a gold EA?

The account type decides how big every trade really is. For grid systems on XAUUSD, that one choice matters more than any setting.

Most brokers offer several account types. Two of them matter most to anyone running an expert advisor on gold: the standard account and the cent account. They look almost the same inside MetaTrader 5, but the money behind each trade is very different. Picking the wrong one is one of the fastest ways to blow up an account with a robot that would otherwise have been fine.

What a cent account actually is

On a cent account, your balance is shown in US cents instead of US dollars. Deposit $500 and MT5 shows a balance of 50,000 (often labelled USC). Everything else is scaled the same way: profit, loss, margin and the value of each lot.

The practical effect is that the same lot size carries about one hundredth of the money risk it would carry on a standard USD account. A trade that would move a standard account by $10 moves a cent account by 10 cents.

Conditions differ between brokers. Always check the contract specification of the exact symbol you will trade, for example XAUUSDc or XAUUSD.c, before you attach any EA.

Why grid EAs on gold usually need a cent account

A grid-based expert advisor does not open one trade and wait. It can hold several positions at once and add to them as price moves. Each extra position needs its own small slice of margin and its own room for floating drawdown.

On a standard account, even the minimum lot on XAUUSD is large for a balance of a few hundred dollars. A grid that opens several of those positions can use up the margin long before price comes back. On a cent account, the same sequence of positions is about one hundred times smaller in money terms, so a modest balance has room to let the system work the way it was designed.

Do not copy settings between account types. Lot sizes that are sensible on a cent account are about one hundred times too large on a standard account. Running a cent-account EA on a standard account is the classic way to lose a whole balance in one move.

A quick example

Say a grid EA opens five gold positions during a pullback, each at the minimum lot size. On a cent account funded with $1,000, the floating loss in a sharp move might be a few percent of the balance. Put the same five positions on a standard account with the same $1,000, and that floating loss is roughly one hundred times bigger in dollars: enough to trigger a margin call or a stop-out.

The robot did nothing different. Only the account type changed.

When a standard account makes sense

  • You trade manually with one position at a time and size each trade yourself.
  • Your balance is large enough that the minimum lot is a small share of it.
  • The EA you use was designed and tested specifically for standard accounts.

Checklist before you run a gold EA

  1. Confirm which account type the EA was built and tested for.
  2. Open that exact account type with your broker. For cent accounts, prefer STP execution.
  3. Check the gold symbol's contract size, digits and minimum lot in MT5.
  4. Start with the balance the developer recommends, not less.
  5. Set an account-level stop you can live with, and test on a demo first.

How this applies to Flex Grid Advance

Flex Grid Advance is a grid-based EA for XAUUSD on MetaTrader 5, and it is licensed for cent STP accounts only. We recommend $1,000 to start, with $500 as the minimum. Its live account on FX Blue shows how it behaves on real conditions.

Key point: account type is not a detail. For multi-position systems on gold, a cent account is what lets a small balance survive normal drawdown. The wrong account type turns a reasonable robot into a dangerous one.
